Business License Division

The City of Pleasanton requires any person conducting business in the city to obtain a business license. This includes any business using a Pleasanton address for advertisement, or state or federal licensing, even if the business is done offsite.

Business License Renewals

The 2019 renewal notices were mailed November 30, 2018.

Payments can be made thru January 31, 2019 without penalty.

Please note:  TOTAL GROSS RECEIPTS reported MUST include all of December 2018 income!

25% penalties will be assessed February 1 and 50% penalties assessed March 1, 2019.

POSTMARKS ARE NOW ACCEPTED – per PMC 5.24.020(a) Delinquent Taxes - Penalties

To CLOSE a license:  If you are no longer operating your business in Pleasanton please enter the “closing date” on the renewal form, the owner must sign/date the bottom, and return the entire form.  You cannot close a license online.

Businesses that operated LESS than one (1) year: please provide an annualized figure for a full 12 month period per PMC Section 5.24.040

Only a current business license in good standing can renew online. Reference the License/Acct# and PIN# printed on the renewal form

To ensure enough time to complete the process for a new business license, it is recommended applicants allow 30 minutes for an over-the-counter review and approvals from various departments.

DISCLAIMER: STATE MANDATE LAW- AB1379

  • AB1379 was imposed by the state to increase the $1 state mandate fee to $4.00 for licensing years 2018 thru 2023. The State of California enacted SB1186 (Dutton; Special access: liability) in 2012 which imposed a $ 1.00 State fee on every applicant for a local business license or renewal (including all in-city commercial and home-based, all exempts, all non-profits, landlords, out -of-city, and all contractors) and is required to be collected by all cities and counties throughout California, including the City of Pleasanton.
